Farewell to The Land of Steel / 2006

The Departure
"The land of steel is no place for a broken heart."
After speaking these words to my friend Chris Beauregard, we decided to leave the city. And on September Eighteenth at seven in the morning we departed the city of Pittsburgh on foot. We traveled by day and made camp at night along the Youghiogheny River (pronounced Yawk-eh-gain-ee). We walked for seven days and covered approximately 100 miles. We ended our walk near the Maryland/West Virginia border in a town called Confluence.
Before we left, we sent out instructions explaining our departure. We then set up a surplus crate in the Carnegie Mellon University Center Gallery that had drawing supplies and a telephone. We requested that people call us on our journey and when they did we described our surroundings and asked them to draw what we were seeing. My friends and family from around the country also called and sent me their drawings. Below, you will find a picture of the gallery upon our departure. Beneath that there is a map of our journey that contains a few of the drawings with their respective photographs.

This trip was a bit of a paradox at times. At the outset, we were two guys who were trying to make sense of a broken heart. So we left the city in hopes of being alone. Yet along our journey we met and spoke with so many interesting people. The motion that we initially thought would isolate us, ended up drawing us closer to people.
Please come back and visit as there is more to come.
