The
project titled Wooden Screws, was completed in the fall of 2002.
For this, I carved tiny screws out of hardwood (approximately 2 ½”
x ¼”) and installed them into the sides of trees around my college
campus. The intermediary was a small found leaf. This installation alluded
to issues regarding technology, man, banality, and perceptions of reality.
I wanted to refrain from directing the viewer’s attention in a specific
way. Rather, I was more interested in letting the viewer draw conclusions
for him or herself. Very few people have seen this work that I know of, but
the point is similar to the leaves and the ocean. That is, if one were to
experience this work it might plant a seed that will, in turn, cause them
to observe their world more closely.
