I worked with Artist Image Resource (A.I.R.) to create an interactive screen-printed book that tells the story of my friendship with Anthony J. Mainiero, aka Mister Tony. The Newsprint Edition is limited to 100 signed copies and measures 5.5” x 7.5” x .125”. When unfolded, it transforms into a 22” x 30” photographic portrait of Tony (see video below).
It is printed on 50lb newsprint to honor Mister Tony’s first job selling newspapers at the age of five in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of East Liberty in 1925. Since newsprint deteriorates over time, each purchase comes with an acid-free, lignin-free, buffered cream paper envelope to extend the life of this book.
This project was created for the exhibition Not Approved By The Comics Code at A.I.R., curated by Joseph Lupo from his ongoing interview series. Extra special THANKS to everyone at A.I.R. for all the support. Lastly, SPECIAL THANKS to Mister Tony’s Daughter Sandra Kiniry for providing additional contextual information for the portrait side of the poster.
